Very rare silver-plated metal sculpture “Cavallo Grande”, designed by Gio Ponti (1891-1979) in the seventies and executed by the skilled silversmith Lino Sabattini (1925-2016) for Christofle in 1978.

This model was produced in two sizes, with this one being the Grand Modèle. Original edition of 1978, not a later reedition! With the original Christofle box.

 

Gio Ponti, an Italian architect, furniture designer, and editor, played a pivotal role in 20th-century Italian modernism. His work spanned various genres, from Art Deco ceramics for Richard-Ginori (Novecenti movement), glassware for Venini and furniture, the famous Superleggera dining chair, to iconic buildings like the Pirelli Tower in Milan, Italy's talles building,  and the Denver Art Museum. Through his magazine Domus, Ponti championed modern art and design, leaving an indelible mark on the creative landscape. He created numerous pieces for Christofle, including the famous Orgue vase, the Cavallo Grande as the Cornes d'Abondance candleholders.

 

Lino Sabattini, was the esteemed Italian silversmith of the 20th century, and left an indelible mark on the world of design with his innovative creations.  He gained acclaim for his innovative silver-plated designs blending neo-classicism with modernist and minimalist aesthetics. His pieces radiate both elegance and artistic vision.

 

The Cavallo Grande stands as a testament to the creative genius of Gio Ponti and the meticulous craftsmanship of Lino Sabattini, all within quality legacy of Christofle. A true treasure for art lovers.
