MAX LE VERRIER – Le Spartiate/L'Archer - c.1930 -
Le Spartiate - L'Archer designed c.1930 by éditeur d'art and founder Max Le Verrier (1891-1973).
Max Le Verrier (1891–1973) was a renowned French sculptor and designer, celebrated for his contributions to the Art Deco movement. Born as Louis Octave Maxime Le Verrier in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, he became a master of creating sculptures, lamps, and decorative objects that epitomized the sleek, geometric, and modern aesthetics of Art Deco.
The artist skillfully integrates in Le Spartiate a naturalistic figure into a distinctly “geometric” Art Deco pose. The sculpture’s base features simple, bold geometric forms. Notice how the arms are positioned perfectly parallel to the top of the base and the ground, while the flowing cloth mirrors this alignment. One leg juts out almost exactly perpendicular to the other leg and the body, reinforcing the geometric aesthetic. Even the hair, cascading in lines alongside the cloth, adds a sense of horizontal motion and angularity. The alignment of the forehead, nose, and upper body creates a cohesive diagonal, while the tip of the elbow, the draped cloth, and the toes align at a nearly identical angle on the opposite side. Every aspect of the pose is meticulously and intentionally designed. Together, the dynamic pose and the structured base create a visual language that feels fresh, modern, and quintessentially Art Deco for its time.
Max Le Verrier’s art reflects the optimism and elegance of the Art Deco period, making him a key figure in its history and is described in multiple books of Art Deco.
